Question d'Orient. Bomarsund (Aland Island). General Baraguay d'Hilliers accompanied by the Admirals reconnoitreing the position of Bomarsund, August 1854

This hand-coloured lithograph depicts the French paddle steamer Milan approaching a low-lying coastline with sparce pine trees. She is flying French flags from her foremast and mizzen mast gaff. The background shows several watch towers, a settlement of low buildings and a fortified building at the water edge. A couple of small, multi-oared rowing boats, with several crew, are preparing to anchor, seemingly in the path of the paddle steamer.
