An English ship on the rocks
This is a very free drawing depicting a ship on the left, smothered in heavy seas and with only her afterpart above the water. There is a rock on the right and a boat pulling towards it. In the centre background there is part of a ship stern on the shore, with her mainmast gone by the board.
Although this work has been dated to around 1700, there are other drawings on similar paper dated to 1672.
