Rear-Admiral Sir Eliab Harvey (1758-1830)
A three-quarter-length portrait of Harvey to left. His left hand on his hip; his right hand resting on his sword. To the right are rocks and foliage; to the left is a background of sea and sky. This work is traditionally attributed to Lemuel Francis Abbott but, since Abbott died in 1803 and the portrait shows Harvey in rear-admiral’s undress uniform, to which rank he was promoted in November 1805, this attribution cannot be correct. Harvey is also shown wearing the gold medal that he received for serving at the Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805, when he was captain of the Temeraire. (Updated April 2019.)
