A galjoot with the Dutch fleet in the distance.

In the centre is a starboard view of a galjoot before a light breeze. Across the background running into the left distance, the Dutch fleet are shown also before the wind, led by the admiral and vice-admiral of the van.

Inscribed in a late hand in brown ink ‘…in the Texel’ and on the back in pencil in a modern hand ‘slag bij Texel in den Jare 1673? des vormiddag tusschen 2 en 4 ure’ (Battle near Texel in the year 1673 in the forenoon (sic) between 2 and 4 o’clock). The latter may be a transcription of a rubbed-out inscription on the front, but the only part even faintly visible there is the date 1666.

This is an unsigned drawing by the Younger. The grey wash in the foreground and pencil and wash on the galjoot have been added by a later hand.

At the time of the Battle of the Texel, van de Velde (were he present) would have been drawing from the English side, and not in a galjoot.
