Sacramento Mail Steamer

This watercolour depicts the 'Sacramento', a 270-foot side-wheel passenger steamer built in 1864 and belonging to the Pacific Mail Steamship Company of San Francisco. There is also The vessel is also what appears to be a wooden screw frigate in the right background. The 'Sacramento' was wrecked on an uncharted reef, nine miles south-east of San Geronimo Island, Mexico, in position 29.50N 115.50W, on 5 December 1872. The reef is now known as Sacramento Reef.
