Official boat badge of HMS Beaufort
The boat badge of HMS 'Beaufort' 1919. The first official pattern approved in 1920. The badge is diamond-shaped with a gold rope twist border representing a naval auxiliary. The design represents on a green field, a mariner's compass proper below a pair of dividers, gold. It refers to Sir Francis Beaufort (1774-1857) who was hydrographer to the Admiralty and deviser of the Beaufort wind scale. The badge is made of cast brass, painted and drilled at the corners. 'BEAUFORT' is inscribed on the reverse. HMS 'Beaufort' was a minesweeper completed as a survey vessel, launched at Troon in 1919 and sold in 1938.
