Celestial globe gores

Celestial globe gores. Astronomical details on the gores show that only the brightest stars are included. There are neither constellation figures nor contours. A table for the magnitude is missing but the stars are represented by four symbols. Along the hour circle is the comment: 'This Chart laid flat pointing E. W. N. S. faceth the Concavity of the Heavens'.

A total of 21 stars are named, and a number are labelled by orientation. Four stars in Orion are labelled and two are indicated by a dotted line slightly deviating from the meridian. Nine are indicated by their Bayer notation. A total of ten constellation names are included for example, Ursa Major & Great Bear, Little Dog and Lyra. For full details about the cartography and construction of these gores please refer to the related publication, Globes at Greenwich.
