British War Medal 1914-18

Awarded to Chief Writer George Henry Mulhern RN (1883-1915). Obverse: Head of King George V (left). Legend: 'GEORGIVS V BRITT : OMN : REX ET IND : IMP:' Reverse: A Knight on horseback (right) a short sword in his right hand, trampling on the German shield, skull and cross-bones. Legend: '1914-18': Engraved on the edge: '342363 G.H. MULHERN. CH. WR.R.N.' Fitted with a bar and orange watered silk ribbon edged with blue, black and white stripes.

George Henry Mulhern, Chief Writer RN, was born in Portsmouth and educated at Greenwich Hospital School. He signed up for twelve years naval service on 25 September 1901.While serving in HMS 'Hawke' in 1902 he took part in the coronation fleet review and in providing crew transfers to the Mediterranean. He was briefly in HMS 'King Edward VII' during 1913 and at the start of World War I, before being invalided on 7 September 1914 with diabetes. He died just over a year later. He married Blanche Springett of Gillingham in 1906 and they had two children.
