Fante flag - Essiamah

The flag is constructed from central red cotton area with a blue and white striped cotton border, which is edged with a fringe cut from strips of white cloth. The central area is decorated with a design formed from blue and white cotton shapes inset into the red cotton with further decoration applied with embroidery. It is embroidered in yellow with the inscription 'ESSIAMAh' which reads the right way round with the hoist on the left side of the flag. The design is appliquéd, depicting a European ship with a blue hull, two square rigged masts and a funnel. On deck are three black figures - one armed with a machete and holding a gun, another carrying a barrel on his head. In front of the ship is a large white anchor, two white figures and four black figures, the latter carrying guns. A quarter of a Union Flag is placed in the canton. The white cotton pole sleeve has yellow and blue printed cotton ties attached at the top and bottom.
