William Wilberforce, 1759-1833

Etching of William Wilberforce drawn by J. Stewart and engraved by C.E. Wagstaff.

George Richmond's original watercolour of this etching depicts Wilberforce at the age of 74, seated in an armchair and holding his spectacles. The work was exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1833 and is now in the National Portrait Gallery. Another version is in the collection of the House of Commons. The portrait was painted by Richmond at Battersea Rise House, the home of Sir Robert Inglis, MP, and where Wilberforce himself had lived before his marriage.
