Captain John Gabriel Stedman, 1744-97

Pencil and wash portrait of Captian John Gabriel Stedman standing over the body of a slave he had captured. The work is inscribed on the reverse: 'From different Parents, different Climes we came, At different Periods; 'Fate Still rules the same.' Unhappy Youth while bleeding on the ground, 'Twas Yours to fall - but Mine to feel the wound'.

The drawing is after the frontispiece for Stedman's 'Narrative of five a years' expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam' (London: J. Johnson and J. Edwards, 1796).
