The sitter, James Gunnis was born in Dublin in 1806 and served in the Royal Marines Band at Portsmouth for over 20 years, from 1823 to 1846. After leaving the Marines, Gunnis moved to London where he continued his career as a musician. The portrait was given to the RUSI museum by his son James W Gunnis. He was also a professional musician and played for the Royal household over several decades.
