Medicine chest
Medicine chest made by Henry Hardy Priest Shanks RN (1837-1909). A small mahogany cabinet with brass lifting handles at either side. A pair of doors at the front open to reveal three drawers. The chest and drawers have dovetail joints. The doors are mahogany with a narrow band of fluted decoration round the edge and a central square oak panel. The left-hand door is fitted with a brass bolt, the right-hand door has a diamond-shaped escutcheon and a lock plate (the mechanism missing). The drawers are opened by flush brass ring-pulls. The drawer bases are lined with dark blue velvet and they are subdivided internally with wooden partitions. The bottom drawer has a fitted front section and a separate drawer which fits into the back section. The lock plate and mechanism is loose in the top drawer, marked: 'AND MADE SECURE J.R. LEVER LOCK'.
