Pocket watch in silver pair case. Thirty hour duration, single train, four pillar, gilt metal fusee movement with verge escapement. Pierced and engraved balance cock with grotesque mask. Steel balance with blued-steel, flat spiral balance spring. Tompion style regulator with silver regulating disc engraved with Arabic numerals 5-30. Engraved on potence plate with the words 'Jas Smith', 'Edinburgh' and the number '6'. Convex white enamel dial with Roman hour numerals and minute circle. Gold spade and poker hands. Silver pair case hallmarked 'London 1787-1788' with makers cameo stamp marks 'T . P' and 'I L'. Scratched inside inner case with 'EJG ', '120h' and '1088687'. Engraved on inner case back with the words 'Prefented to Capt. Horatio Nelfson. R.N. on his Marriage by the crew of H.M.S. BOREAS March 11th 1787'. Outer case stamped with a lion passant cameo inside bezel. Case back fitted with a black velvet liner. Nickel pendant and stirrup bow. Convex bull's-eye glass over dial. Watch chain 230mm long, consisting of three rows of base metal belcher chain with silver end plates and a rectangular silver plate with applied base metal decoration depicting a horse and rider. Stamped with a lion passant cameo mark for silver goods from the Netherlands made between 1814 and 1953. Chain fitted with a base metal hinged swivel catch, silver split ring and a base metal cast watch key with oval silver fob, with engraved monogram 'h n'. End plates, split ring and fob stamped with various foreign cameo marks including a scroll letter 'M'. The hands and dial, pendant and bow probably 19th century replacements. The attribution of the watch to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) is thought to be dubious. The watch chain is a composite and the monogram is dubious.
