Medal commemorating action off the Helder and Captain Van Gelder, 1673

Medal commemorating action off the Helder and Captain Van Gelder, 1673. Obverse: The coat of arms with helmet and scrolls, surmounted by a crest of Neptune with an arrow in hand, of Van Gelder; an inscribed compartment below, 'Gedagtenis Van Jonkh IAN PAVLZ van GELDER Capt. op't bed van eer gestorven den 21 Aug. Ao. 1673, out 26 Jaren'. (In memory of Jonkheer John, son of Paul Van Gelder, Captain dead on the bed of honour, 26 Aug. 1673, aged twenty-six years). Legend (incuse): 'VAN GELDER SZEEVOOGDS SOON EN HVLP ENEER BLEEF DOODT DOEN VIERMAAL'T FRANS EN BRITS GEWELT VOOR HOLLAND VLOOT' (Van Gelder, the son, support and honour of The Admiral perished in the battle in which the French and English forces four times flew before the Dutch). Reverse: A naval action. Legend (incuse): 'DE VADER WON DE SLAG DE ZOON VERLOOR ZYN BLOED DE WINST IS DIER GEKOGT T VERLIES IS WEL GEBOET' (The father won the fight, the son lost his life; the gain is dearly bought, the loss is well repaid). This example is struck from a different die from the rare original ones at the Hague and British Museums, since the lettering is slightly different, and a large flag appears at the masthead of the vessel which is not in the original medal.
