Sledge
Used on Nares' Arctic expedition 1875-76. McClintock eight-man sledge. Iron-shod wooden runners of jointed contruction reinforced with copper pins. Runners lashed to eight cross bars with raw hide. Netting at each end with a canvas cover in the middle. A canvas covered load including tent poles packed on top. Carved on side of sledge "HMS ALERT".
