Prize medal, Society of Arts and Commerce

Silver medal awarded to Commander Henry Downes, RN (1790-1852), for his invention, in 1837 of an annular scupper for ship's decks.
Obverse: 'Conjoined heads of Mercury, in a cap and Pallas Athene, in a helmet (Left). Legend: 'ARTS AND SCIENCE PROMOTED'. Reverse: Legend: 'TO COMMANDER H. DOWNES R.N. MDCCCXLIV'. Inscription within a laurel wreath tied with a bow. 'FOR HIS ANNULAR SCUPPER FOR SHIP'S DECKS'. Below:' SOCY. INSD. LONDON 1753'. See SLR2411 for a model of the scupper design.
