Fleeming Jenkin

Print depicting the electrical engineer (Henry Charles) Fleeming Jenkin (1833-1885). An insription on the reverse of the print identifies the portrait as of Fleeming Jenkin L.L.D., F.R.S. and Professor of Engineering. Jenkin was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1865, became Professor of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh in 1868 and received the degree of L.L.D. from the University of Glasgow in 1883. Jenkin is perhaps best known for collaborating with Lord Kelvin (1824-1907) on research into electrical cables, especially the practicalities of underwater cables.

The print depicts Jenkin in the middle of his laboratory creating a spark of electricity between two wires from a battery. He is surrounded by objects, books and papers that reflect his life, interests and inventions. These are a chronometer, telephone, phonograph, submarine cable, model of a steam train and bridge, diagrams of a drain trap and of strains, two automaton and his telpherage, a system for the economical overhead electrical conveyance of bulky materials. Items of personal significance are guns, a fishing rod, copies of the plays of Sophocles and of Aeschylus. There is also a paper bearing the name Kate, the meaning of which is unclear (Jenkin's wife was called Anne and they had no daughters).

The print appeared in a series of 50 etched portraits by William Hole, 'Quasi Cursores, Portraits of the High Officers and Professors of the University of Edinburgh at Its Tercentenary Festival' (1884).
