Medal commemorating Admiral of the Fleet Richard Howe (1726-1799) and the Battle of the Glorious First of June, 1794. Obverse: Bust of the Admiral (right), hair long, tied with ribbon. Uniform open, over a breast-plate. Cloak over left shoulder. Legend: 'RIC . COMES HOWE THALASSIARCHA BRITAN.' (British Admiral). Exergue: 'PATRIAE DECUS ET TUTAMEN' (The country's glory and defence). Reverse: View of the battle. Quarter view of Lord Howe's flagship Queen Charlotte sinking a French ship of the line. Legend: 'NON SORTE SED VIRTUTE' (Not by luck, but by valour). Exergue: 'GALLOR . CLASSIS PROFLIG . DIE I JUNII . MDCCXCIV' (The French fleet routed on 1 June 1794).
