Medal commemorating L.J.R. Agassiz, explorer and zoologist. Obverse: Head of the explorer (right). Inscription (left) (vertical): 'AGASSIZ.' Reverse: Within a wreath of laurel tied with a bow a Roman lamp above, crossed torches below; inscription between them and below. Legend: 'TERRA MARIQUE DUCTOR INDAGATIONE NATURAE'. Crossed leaf-sprays. Inscription 'NA 1807. OB 1873.' In 1865 Agassiz with the assistance of the Emperor of Brazil explored the Amazon.
