Ingot commemorating the 'Grande Hermine' 1535-1536
Rectangular shaped ingot. Obverse: Port broadside view of the 'Grande Hermine', sails set, three-masted vessel. Inscription: 'GRANDE HERMINE'. Reverse: Inscription, 'GRANDE HERMINE 1535-36, Flagship of the great French explorer Jacques Cartier during his second voyage to the New World, the "Grande Hermine" was the largest of the three ships under his command. During 1535, in the "Grande Hermine", Cartier discovered the St. Lawrence River and explored upstream as far as the present-day site of Montreal.'
