China War Medal 1900
Obverse Bust of Queen Victoria, crowned and veiled, with order (left) Legend: 'VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX'. Reverse: at the foot of a palm tree a trophy of flags, cannons, the royal sheild, a capstan, etc. Legend: 'ARMIS EXPOSCERE PACEM'. Exergue: 'CHINA 1900'. Inscription on edge: 'ALFRED NOAD. STO. H.M.S. ALGERINE.' Bar: 'TAKU FORTS'. Fitted with a bar and cerise ribbon edged with yellow.
The two medals associated with Alfred Noad 91872-1960) were acquired from the family of his daughter Ruby Noad (Holbrow). However, the World War I group he would have received for his service in HMS 'Duncan' was not included. His service record indicates that he left HMS 'Algerine' on 12 April 1900 before the attack on the Taku Forts and would not have been qualified to receive the Third China War Medal 1900. His name is not on the medal roll.
