Black glass artificial horizon
A circular brass case on three levelling feet covered with a blackened glass plate serving as mirror. The spirit level is missing.
The artificial horizon is contained in a fitted rectangular wooden box, that also contains a box sextant by Gilbert and Sons (NAV1220) and a pocket compass (NAV0466).
This instrument belonged to Edward Newell Harrison, clerk of HMS ‘Assistance’. He went to the Arctic in 1850-51 in search of Sir John Franklin, and died in the West Indies before 1855.
