House flag, Oldenburg Portugiesische Dampschiffs Rhederei

The house flag of Oldenburg Portugiesische Dampschiffs Rhederei, Oldenburg.

A blue rectangular flag bearing a red cross and the letters 'OPDR' in white in the quarters. The flag is made of wool bunting with a cotton hoist and is machine sewn. The letters are stencilled in a white oil-based paint. A rope and clip are attached.

Oldenburg Portugiesische Dampschiffs Rhederei was founded in Oldenburg, Germany in 1882 by Auguste Schultze and Hermann Burmester. The company’s headquarters were transferred to Hamburg in 1915. By the outbreak of World War I, the company was operating 28 steamers between the ports of Hamburg, Bremen, Rotterdam, Portugal, Antwerp and Morocco, as well as between the Canary Islands and the Azores to Hamburg. The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War halted trips to and from Spain, and after World War II the company’s future was grim due to German surrender to the Allies. However, the company managed to continue operations and today still operates a carrier service between Germany, the UK, Portugal, Spain and North Africa.
