National flag of the German Democratic Republic (1959-1990)

The national flag of the German Democratic Republic, 1959-1990 pattern. It is made of synthetic fibre bunting and the hoist is made from fabric of a cotton and linen blend. The flag is machine sewn with the design printed onto the fabric. A rope and two aluminium clips are attached to hoist the flag. Written in biro on the hoist 'ØST TYSKELAND'.

The flag has three black, red and yellow horizontal stripes. In the centre is a yellow wreath of wheat, within which is a device of a hammer and compasses. The wheat represents the peasants, the hammer - industrial workers, the compasses - science and industry, with the whole on a red disc symbolising communist ideology.
