House flag, 'Clan Sutherland'

House flag, Stem jack from the Clan Line vessel 'Clan Sutherland' 1951. It is made of Clan Sutherland blue and green tartan dress fabric with a diamond-shaped piece of white synthetic bunting inserted in the centre. This is printed with a red lion rampant. The flag is machine sewn with a cotton hoist. Until the mid-1960’s Clan Line ships would fly a stem jack with a Scottish lion on a white diamond on a background of the clan tartan referred to in the vessel’s name. This is an unusual example of a jack designed specifically for a particular merchant vessel.
