Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805)

Head-and-part-shoulders plaster bust of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (hollow back) with a small square base, on a round socle.

The whole item is painted brown. Nelson's head is shown turned half to his right, with bare shoulders, no queue, and a straight breast line. The front of the base bears the inscription: 'NELSON' and the back the inscriptions 'L GAHAGAN Fecit 1804' and 'F. KEEVIL AND SONS / MOULDERS / BATH'. The latter is directly inscribed in the plaster under the right shoulder whereas the others seem to be part of the cast. On the back of the shoulders is the remaining left half of a rectangular printed label, which reads and can be reconstructed as 'THIS B[UST] / WAS MODELLED BY L [GAHAGAN] / LORD NELSON WAS S[ITTER TO HIM?] / JUST PREVIOUS TO T[RAFALGAR?] / BELIEVED TO BE THE LAST [BUST TO BE?] / DONE BEFORE HIS [DEATH]. It may, however, be a cast made about 1923 by the Keevils, who were a very long-lived firm.

This bust is of the same pattern as SCU0098, and another plaster bust now in the Victoria Art Gallery, Bath.
