Warship; Turkish(?); 74 guns

Scale: 1:48. Full hull model of a 74-gun two-decker ship of the line. Built in the 'Georgian’ style (see SLR0249) most of the planking and carved decoration is boxwood with the use of bone for the ship's wheel and stern galleries. The model is decked and represents a ship measuring 165 feet on the gun deck and with a beam of 47 feet. However, both date and nationality are very uncertain. It was once believed to depict the 'Leander', a British 50-gun frigate of 1815 but this is now thought unlikely. A possible Turkish origin has been suggested based upon two features; the presence of Turkish flags either side of the turbanned bust on the stern decoration, and the absence of a belfry (religious reasons forbidding the use of bells in Turkish ships). The fact that the model shows solid bulwarks on the forecastle and quarterdeck suggests a date not earlier than 1800.
