Warship; Third rate; 74 guns

Scale 1:96. A contemporary full hull model of a two-decker 74-gun ship of the line, shown prior to launching on a slipway. It is complete with a full set of launching flags consisting of the red ensign at the stern, tri-anchor Admiralty flag, the Royal Standard, the Admiralty fouled anchor and the Union Jack just aft of the figurehead.

After the commencement of war with France in 1793, the making of finely detailed ship models was discontinued. A resumption of this craft was taken up again after peace in 1815 but on a very much-reduced scale. This model, which dates from about 1815, although pleasing in appearance, bears the mark of wartime austerity. It shows the stronger, round bow introduced in 1805–10 as a result of the experiments carried out by the Master Shipwright Sir Robert Seppings, later Surveyor of the Navy, 1813–32. It also retains the old fashioned square stern, which was not to give way to the round version before 1817. It represents a ship measuring 180 feet along the gun deck by 48 feet in the beam with a tonnage of 1822. It cannot be positively identified with any 74-gun ship of the period 1811–1817.
