Laughton (1882); Cargo vessel

Scale: 1:48. A model of the starboard side of the Laughton (1882) made entirely in wood with silver-plated metal fittings and realistically painted. The hull is made from wood and painted brick red below the waterline, black above with the bulwarks painted white. A row of portholes is shown both along the bulwarks and along the black portion of hull. On bow "Laughton". All decks are unpainted wood and scored to indicate planking. The foredeck fittings include an anchor stowed on a pair of davits with a cable connecting it to the hawse hole, anchor cable winch gear, a capstan and four ventilators. The forward cargo deck has two large hatches with hatch covers drawn onto their upper surfaces, a derrick mast positioned between them with two booms and two ventilators. The main superstructure is positioned amidships and is largely enclosed with entry ports forward and aft. A single boat is stowed on the deck above and there is an enclosed pilot house with an open bridge above. The single truncated funnel is painted black. The aft cargo deck is the same configuration as the forward cargo deck. The stern deck fittings include a pair of davits and provision for stowing a boat, a flat-roofed skylight, a companion hatch cover, a wheel, pair of bollards, and a binnacle. Half of a four-bladed propeller is shown. The model is displayed in its original mahogany-framed display case, glazed at the front and top, and mounted onto a surface-silvered mirror.
