Irene (1900); Service vessel; Skiff; Thames skiff
Scale: 1:6. A contemporary full hull plank on frame model of the 'Irene' (1900), a Thames skiff. The model is equipped with oars, cushions and seat back, rudder and steering yoke. Hull is inscribed with the name ‘Irene’ on either side of bow.
This model depicts a typical Thames pleasure skiff of the type seen in large numbers above the locks at Teddington. The design of the skiff has remained unchanged for over 20 years, built in clinker fashion and normally rowed by two pairs of spoon bladed oars, mounted through the wooden rowlocks on raised saxboards. At this scale, this model represents a skiff measuring 25 feet in length by 4 feet in the beam, and is roughly the same size as the one used in Jerome K. Jerome’s classic novel ‘Three Men in a Boat’.
