Sectional model; Midship model

Scale: Unknown. A sectional model depicting the midship section of a warship with arrangements for armour plating, as patented by Henry Caudwell in 1863. The model has been made in wood and shows three compartments separated by four bulkheads. The bulkheads each have a rectangular aperture in similar locations. The exterior hull has been painted in realistic colours: Brick red below the waterline with black upperworks. The model is incomplete and there are several pieces missing. It appears to have once had a deck as there are metal pins and adhesive residue on the upper faces of the compartments and deck beams. A card label accompanies the model, which reads "Sectional model of armour plated ship of war. Henry Caudwell letters patent.A.D 1863 April 10. No 914.". Model is mounted on Chatham baseboard.
