Sampler
Framed and glazed linen sampler worked with silk thread using various techniques, including satin stitch, cross stitch, French knots, cord stitch and long and short stitch. The sampler features motifs of flowers and birds as well the verse: 'Do you my Fair endeavour to possess / An Elegance of mind as well as dress / Be that your ornament and know to Please / By graceful Natures unaffected Ease.' There is also an embroidered medallion which contains a foul anchor under a willow and the inscription: 'Nelson/ hero of the Nile/ 1799'. The maker’s name, Mary Lupson, is stitched at the bottom.
