Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1833

Undress coat of Vice-Admiral Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald [1775-1860], made of fine blue wool face cloth, in the cut-away style. The coat is double-breasted with two rows of seven gilt metal buttons, and also features a turn down collar. The collar is interlined and the underside is heavily stitched with a series of running stitches that serve to both shape it and add stiffness. On each shoulder are four eyelets for epaulettes. The top of the sleeves are gathered at the shoulders, and the sleeves themselves terminate in a round cuff. Each sleeve features three gilt brass buttons above two rows of distinction lace over three non-working blue twist buttonholes.
The coat has tails with faux sword pleats which conceal two pocket bags. The pockets have been lined with a black silk/cotton twill. There are two hip buttons and two additional buttons on each of the sword pleats. On the outerside of each of the hip buttons are two faux three-pointed pocket flaps with three non-working blue twist buttonholes on each flap. Below each point of the pocket flaps is a gilt brass button.
The inside of the coat is partially lined with blue wool and padded udner the arms and part of the small of the back. The back of the coat itself is unlined. The top of the shoulders are interlined with tweed and doctor's flannel. The sleeves are lined with white cotton twill, however, the sleeves are lined at the cuffs with black grosgrain ribbon. In the front of the coat at the waist is a partial belt of black silk twill with a metal clasp. Also in the front is a interior pocket in the left breast. The tails are partially lined with blue face cloth to cover the pocket bags. All edges on the coat are cut, but not finished, with the exception of the back vent and sword pleats.
