Liquid compass

Liquid compass - Merchant navy pattern.

Bowl: Blue painted brass, filler plug at side, expansion chamber at base incorporated with bottom glazing of bowl. Inside of bowl painted white with four black painted lubber lines two of which are painted on plates secured to side of bowl. Verge ring graduated to 360 degrees. A socket is fitted at centre of verge glass to accommadate a shadow pin. Mounted in brass gimbal ring Diameter 11.25" (28.5 cm)

Card: Diameter 7.5" (19 cm). Metal ring 1.2" (3 cm) wide white with black marking graduated to 360 degrees and to 1/4 points, attached by light wire framework to float dome at centre.

Needle: Four flat needles in two tiers, attached to card, float dome and the wire framework on which card is attached to float.

Pivot: Brass pivot stem secured to bridge attached across bottom of bowl. Pivot point engages in large brass cone shaped jewelled pivot cup at centre of float.
