Dirk

Dirk, after 1856, which belonged to Admiral Louis Henry Keppel Hamilton (1890-1957). The hilt of the dirk consists of a straight crossbar, with inversed acorn ends. On the cross on the obverse of the crossbar, in the centre is a crown over a foul anchor motif, the whole encircled by a laurel wreath. The dirk has a gilt lion's-head pommel. The white fish-skin grip is bound with three gilt wires. The straight steel blade is flat-backed, with a double-edged spear point. The obverse of the blade is engraved with the Shield of David and bears the inscription 'CHIEF CAPTAIN'S PRIZE, AWARDED TO MR L.H.K. HAMILTON. BRITANNIA R.N.COLLEGE.DARTMOUTH'. There are no proof marks on the obverse of the blade. The reverse of the blade is engraved with the words 'HMS CUMBERLAND APRIL, 1908', with decoration above and below, a crown over a foul anchor motif, rays, acorn motifs, and a crown over the Royal cypher 'G v R' with rays above, between further acorn motifs. The black leather scabbard has one gilt locket with two rings and chape. These are decorated with threads and scrolls. The chape is also decorated with a honeysuckle motif. There is a steel spring at the top of the back edge of the locket, which engages in a slot in the back quillon.
