Sovereign of the Seas (1637)

Designed and built in Woolwich un1637 by Phineas Pett and his son Peter as the largest warship of her time, Sovereign of the Seas was intended as the flagship of Charles I's navy. The decoration of the vessel was conceived by the dramatist and actor Thomas Heywood. King Edgar (AD 44-75) is represented on horseback, forward of the forecastle, trampling on the British Kings from whom he received submission.

While Sovereign of the Seas was at Chatham in January 1696, a candle was left alight in the cook's cabin and she suffered a devastating fire.
