A Perilous Journey: live in conversation highlights the perils of maritime migration, through talks and a panel discussion by those who have experienced it, those who have represented it, and those who are leading rescue missions today.
SOS MEDITERRANEE an international civil, maritime, and humanitarian organisation dedicated to rescuing people in distress at sea will also have stand explaining their work.
This event has been programmed for 'Crossings', a new display on migration in the Queen's House. The display features an extract of the comic 'A Perilous Journey' (2015) by PositiveNegatives and illustrated by Lindsay Pollock.
This comic illustrates part of Hasko's story, an acclaimed artist from Syria who was forced to make this sea crossing to Scandinavia to secure a safer future for his family.

Location
Entry is through the doors of the Orangery of the Queen's House (the entrance facing Greenwich Park).
The event will take place in the Van de Velde Studio in the Orangery.

Hasko Hasko
Hasko Hasko (b.1973, Aleppo, Syria) graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Damascus in 2000, specialising in oil painting.
In 2013, Hasko fled the war in Syria to Turkey, and the following year crossed the Mediterranean by lifeboat to reach Europe. He eventually settled in Denmark, where he lives as a refugee

Lindsay Pollock
Lindsay Pollock is an illustrator who worked with PositiveNegatives on a series of biographical comic projects about marginalised people including Meet the Somalis, A Perilous Journey and Migrants On The Margins. His book Vanni [2019 - New Internationalist / Graphic Mundi / Penguin India], written in collaboration with Dr Benjamin Worku-Dix tells the semi-fictionalised account of two families during the Sri Lankan Civil War.
Today he lives in Sheffield and is developing a fictional comic series Follybrook.

Dr Benjamin Worku-Dix
Dr Benjamin Worku-Dix is the Founding Director of PositiveNegatives and a Senior Fellow at SOAS University of London.
Founded in 2012, PositiveNegatives is a non-profit creative research organisation based at SOAS. PositiveNegatives create compelling animations, comics and podcasts about pressing social, humanitarian and environmental issues. They combine ethnographic research with creative techniques to transform personal stories into art.

SOS MEDITERRANEE
SOS MEDITERRANEE is an international maritime and humanitarian organisation dedicated to saving lives in the Central Mediterranean, one of the world’s deadliest migration routes. Founded in 2015, it has operated continuous search-and-rescue missions since 2016, assisting more than 43,500 people in distress at sea aboard the Aquarius and Ocean Viking.
Through its three pillars of action — rescue, protect and bear witness — SOS MEDITERRANEE responds to people in distress while documenting the realities of journeys that often remain unseen. Funded predominantly by private donations, it is supported by supporters across Europe, including in the UK where it has had a presence since 2025.
