Correspondence of Captain William Bligh and Lieutenant Francis Godolphin Bond

Leather bound album containing original correspondence of Captain William Bligh and Lieutenant Francis Godolphin Bond.

The items numbered 1-29 (3 not present) are letters between Bligh and Bond dated between 8 February 1791 and 1 September 1793. This is the period during which Bond was first lieutenant under Bligh on the breadfruit voyage of HMS PROVIDENCE (1791). Those numbered 30-43 are a continuation of their correspondence, dated between 21 September 1793 (when the PROVIDENCE reached Deptford) and 17 April 1796.

The items numbered 46-54 are letters sent and received by Bond between December 1792 and 15 December 1817. They include letters relating to James Guthrie, George Tobin and Edward (Ned) Harwood, who were messmates on the PROVIDENCE. There are also letters to and from Bond’s brother Thomas.

The album also has a folder of loose sheets which are Bond’s manuscript notes made during the voyage of the PROVIDENCE.

The arrangement and labelling of the original items in the album correspond with the transcriptions in Parts I, III and II of ‘Fresh Light on Bligh…’ by George Mackaness, see BND/3.
