Private correspondence received by Knowles and his father Joseph Knowles senior (1777-1732), mainly relating to attempts to further his career. Including a letter from Admiral Edward Pellew, dated 1 December 1827; letters from Admiral Sir Lawrence William Halstead, 21 June 1829 to 8 August 1833 and undated, with enclosures from Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, 23 March 1831, and Admiral Sir William Parker, 21 July 1831; a letter from Admiral George Anson, dated 8 August 183(?); also two memorials by Knowles, 1833 and 17 May 1834.
