White rajah / Nigel Barley.
A biography of Sir James Brooke (1803-1868), soldier and adventurer who founded the Raj of Sarawak and ruled as its first White Rajah from 1841 until his death. Resigning his commision from the Bengal Army, he unsuccessfully attempted to trade in the Far East before assisting the Sultan of Brunei to quash an uprising. In return for Brooke's assistance the Sultan awarded him the governorship of Sarawak. Complete sovereignty of Sarawak was ceded to Brooke in 1842. Brooke later presented the Island of Labuan to the British Government and became its governor and commander-in-chief in 1848. His reign was controversial with accusations of his excessive use of force against natives, under the guise of anti-piracy operations, leading to the appointment of a Commission of Inquiry in Singapore in 1854.

Britain's imperial cornerstone in China : the Chinese Maritime Customs Service, 1854-1949 /Donna Brunero.
"Established as the Imperial Maritime Customs Service in the wake of China's defeat in the Opium Wars of 1842-3, the British-dominated service became a central feature of the treaty port system. It was also responsible for harbour maintenance, lighthouse service, quarantine, anti-piracy patrols and postal services. [...] The book provides an overview of the development of the service [...] focusing particularly on its last decades when it faced challenges from nationalist elements, civil unrest and war, compounded with tensions between the inspectorate and British interests in China."--Provided by the publisher.

Jardine Matheson : traders of the far east
A history of Jardine Matheson covering the period between 1832, when the company was founded, and 1949, when the company was expelled from mainland China following the Communist revolution. Based originally in Canton (Guangzhou), the company soon moved to Hong Kong where it has continued to operate, the only company to pre-date the Treaty of Nanking, which opened China to foreign commerce in 1842. Set against the wider context of Sino-British history, the author examines the company's history alongside key events such as the ending of the East India Company's monopoly, the Opium wars, the development of Hong Kong, the introduction of railways to China, the Sino-Japanese Wars, the Boxer rebellion and the First and Second World Wars.
