"Dann sprang er èuber Bord" : Alltagspsychologie und psychische Erkrankung an Bord britischer Schiffe im 19. Jahrhundert /Karl-Heinz Reger.
"Our fascination with big sailing ships is unbroken. In the extensive social-historical literature of naval history the question of how everyday life on board was psychologically experienced is totally uncharted, so is the description of psychological diseases. On the contrary, it must be assumed that a variety of psychological disorders occurred among the mostly young crew members of the sometimes completely closed system 'ship'. The ship was 'world' for the men on board. Karl-Heinz Reger systematically examines the medical journals of the Royal Navy from the time between 1830 and 1880. Due to the double access of the psychiatrist and the historian a large number of phenomena are illustrated. After studying everyday life on board from a psychological point of view the author shows the various disorders including the phenomena of drowning and suicide. All illnesses known in modern neuro-psychiatry are to be found. Not only are 120 cases with exemplary transcriptions of the stylistically excellent English original text presented, but also all therapeutical efforts are described and the complete list of all medicines (including annotations) used on board is given. A psychoanalytical interpretation of the psychological strain and its techniques of compensation forms the final chapter."--Provided by the publisher.

British and Commonwealth warship camouflage of WWII : volume III :cruisers, minelayers and armed merchant cruisers /Malcolm Wright
"During the Second World War navies developed low visibility camouflage, applied to both the vertical and horizontal surfaces of their ships, in order to reduce visibility by blending in with the sea, or confuse the identity of a ship by applying obtrusive patters. In this volume by maritime artist Mal Wright, all the paint schemes that adorned the cruisers, minelayers and armed merchant cruisers of the Royal Navy and Commonwealth are depicted in detail, along with discussion on changes of armament and electronics that effected the outward appearance of each ship. Beginning with the older cruisers, the book goes on to cover all the other cruiser classes taking in heavy cruisers, prewar cruisers, prewar and wartime cruisers; a large part also covers minelayers and armed merchant vessels (AMCs). Where possible both sides of the ship are depicted. With 800 full colour illustrations, arranged by ship type rather than camouflage scheme, this book concentrates the clearest possible information into a single volume to provide a one-stop reference source. Many schemes would be difficult for any reader to unearth other than with the most intensive research, so this work is an invaluable tool for historians, collectors, modelmakers and wargamers."--Provided by the publisher.

Ark Royal : the life, death and rediscovery of the legendary Second World War aircraft carrier /Mike Rossiter.
"HMS Ark Royal is one of the Royal Navy's most iconic ships. When she was launched in 1938 she was one of the most sophisticated weapons at the disposal of British military command. The aircraft carrier was the latest, and soon to be one of the most feared, developments in naval warfare. In her first two years of operation the Ark Royal survived countless attacks, and was considered one of the luckiest ships in the Navy. But her air of invincibility was to prove wishful thinking. Within one month of sinking the Bismarck, the Ark Royal too was destroyed while sailing off the coast of Gibraltar. And there she has rested, one kilometre below the surface of the Mediterranean, until her wreck was discovered by Mike Rossiter in 2004. In gripping detail, and using the testimony of survivors of the sinking and men who lived, flew and fought on the Ark Royal, Mike Rossiter tells the remarkable story of the life and legend of this most iconic of ships. Also, and for the first time, he reveals the story of the quest to discover the wreck of this naval legend."--Provided by the publisher.

The arming and fitting of English ships of war : 1600-1815 /Brian Lavery
"The Royal Navy armed and fitted out literally thousands of wooden warships between 1600 and 1815, and virtually every item of process was the subject of alteration and improvment during this period. For the first time, in this book the precise details of these developments are set out, wherever possible with exact information on sizes and scantlings based on reliable contemporary sources. This makes the book an indispensable guide to all historical ship modellers, but also provides a wider analysis of technological developlment which wil be of great value to maritime historians and industrial archaeologists."--Back cover

Taranto 1940 : The Fleet Air Arm's precursor to Pearl Harbor /Angus Konstam ; illustrated by Peter Dennis.
"The Royal Navy's attack on Taranto in 1940 heralded a new age of warfare. It was the decisive moment in a struggle for dominance of the Mediterranean that had gone on for months, as the British and Italian navies both looked to secure maritime supply routes for their colonies. With the enormous demands of a global war beginning to tell, the British capital ships were simply too thinly spread for a large fleet action against Taranto, where the bulk of the Italian fleet lay menacingly. How was the Royal Navy to eliminate the threat of the Regia Marina? This is the story of one of World War II's most devastating raids, recounting how a handful of obsolete Fairey Swordfish biplanes swooped in and destroyed an Italian battleship and badly damaged two more. With expert analysis, detailed colour illustrations and a gripping narrative, this book explains the origins of the attack, its planning and execution, and what happened in the aftermath."--Provided by the publisher.

Beyond the sea : a Wren at war /Christian Lamb.
"Love, duty and true-life adventure in the shadow of the Second World War. Christian Lamb is one of the last surviving Wren Officers to have served her country throughout the whole of WW2. Having joined the Women's Royal Naval Service at nineteen, she quickly rose through the ranks, serving at a degaussing range before being posted to Operations and Radar in Belfast. There she joined the team tracking the movements of the Royal Navy and the dreaded Kriegsmarine in the Battle of the Atlantic, the biggest sea battle of the war. Plotting the progress of the Royal Navy's ships became an intensely personal mission for Christian when her fiance John's ship HMS Oribi was surrounded by a U Boat 'wolf pack'. Though her colleagues tried to persuade her to cut short her shift, Christian insisted on remaining at her post to mark Oribi's progress as the terrifying attack unfolded. Thankfully, HMS Oribi and John made it to shore. Newly married, Christian was next posted to a vital role back in London COHQ. In a basement office in Whitehall, she worked on top secret maps for the D Day landings, while Winston Churchill paced the floor upstairs. Now in her 101st year, Christian is keen to share her remembrances of duty, danger, love and marriage in war before they are beyond living memory"--Provided by publisher.

Pressganged : the letters of George Price of Southwark alias "George Green" : ordinary seamen in HM sloop Speedy 1803-1805 /[commentary David Ellison].
This book provides a history of the practice of 'pressganging' in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic wars, based on the account of George Price, a sailor pressed into service in 1803. The book quotes letters sent by Price to his brother while serving in HMS Speedy, and other contemporary accounts including news reports, ships' logs, and court reports, to provide a detailed picture of how pressing was used in the conflict, and the daily lives of affected sailors. Includes black and white illustrations throughout.

A new naval history / edited by Quintin Colville and James Davey
"A New Naval History brings together the most significant and interdisciplinary approaches to contemporary naval history. The last few decades have witnessed a transformation in how this field is researched and understood and this volume captures the state of a field that continues to develop apace. It examines - through the prism of naval affairs - issues of nationhood and imperialism; the legacy of Nelson; the socio-cultural realities of life in ships and naval bases; and the processes of commemoration, journalism and stage-managed pageantry that plotted the interrelationship of ship and shore. This bold and original publication will be essential for undergraduate and postgraduate students of naval and maritime history. Beyond that, though, it marks an important intervention into wider historiographies that will be read by scholars from across the spectrum of social history, cultural studies and the analysis of national identity."--Provided by the publisher.
