America's sailors in the Great War : seas, skies, and submarines /Lisle A. Rose
"When the U.S. entered World War I in April 1917, America's sailors were immediately forced to engage in the utterly new realm of anti-submarine warfare waged on, below and above the seas by a variety of small ships and the new technology of airpower. The U.S. Navy substantially contributed to the safe trans-Atlantic passage of a two million man Army that decisively turned the tide of battle on the Western Front even as its battleship division helped the Royal Navy dominate the North Sea. Thoroughly professionalized, the Navy of 1917-18 laid the foundations for victory at sea twenty-five years later."--Provided by the publisher.

Haulbowline : the naval base & ships of Cork Harbour /Daire Brunicardi.
"Cork harbour is recognised as one of the finest natural harbours in the world. It has been a naval base almost continuously for over 200 years, and druing that time it has always played a key part in Ireland's maritime affairs. In this fascinating book, Daire Brunicardi captures the way in which the harbour has helped to define Ireland's relationship with the sea. From the first development of Haulbowline Island and the construction of the Naval Dockyard, the author charts the activities of the Victorian navy in Irish waters, how during the First World War, Cork harbour became a pillar of the British defence against the German U-boats, why the first US flotillas took the harbour as their home and how, after Armistice, the British navy became based here throughout the Irish Civil War. What emerges is a thorough, engaging and insightful history of the heartland of Ireland's maritime interests."--Back cover

The ships of Pembroke Dockyard / Phil Carradice
"The year 2014 marks the bicentenary of Pembroke Dock. This book looks at the ships created during the 112-year history of the dockyard, covering their construction, careers and, in many cases, their demise as well. During those years, nearly 300 ships were built at Pembroke Dock, the only Royal Naval dockyard ever to exist in Wales, but only two major conflicts took place, so most Pembroke ships served in the constant series of skirmishes that marked the growth of the British Empire. These small colonial engagements helped give the Royal Navy a standing that has hardly ever been equalled, before or since, and provide fascinating stories for the reader. In this book, well known Welsh historian and broadcaster Phil Carradice tells these stories, focussing on the frigates, sloops, gunboats and, occasionally, battleships from Pembroke Dockyard and their crews who fought them."--Provided by the publisher.

Essex class aircraft carriers of the Second World War / Steve Backer ; plans by Alan Raven ; colour profiles by Steve Wiper ; photographic consultant A D Baker.
"Built in larger numbers than any fleet carrier before or since, the Essex class can claim to be the US Navy's most significant weapon in the defeat of Japan. Carrying up to 100 aircraft and capable of absorbing enormous punishment (not one was sunk), they spearheaded the Fast Carrier Task Forces for most of the Pacific War."--Provided by the publisher.

The English and French navies, 1500-1650 : expansion, organisation and state-building /Benjamin W. D. Redding.
"Challenges the received wisdom about the relative weakness of French naval power when compared with that of England. This book traces the advances and deterioration of the early modern English and French sea forces and relates these changes to concurrent developments within the respective states. Based on extensive original research in correspondence and memoirs, official reports and accounts, receipts of the exchequer and inventories in both France, where the sources are disparate and dispersed, and England, the book explores the rise of both kingdoms' naval resources from the early sixteenth to the mid seventeenth centuries. As a comparative study, it shows that, in sharing the Channel and with both countries increasing their involvement in maritime affairs, English and French naval expansion was intertwined. Directly and indirectly, the two kingdoms influenced their neighbours' sea programmes. The book first examines the administrative transformations of both navies, then goes on to discuss fiscal and technological change, and finally assesses the material expansion of the respective fleets. In so doing it demonstrates the close relationship between naval power and state strength in early modern Europe. One important argument challenges the received wisdom about the relative weakness of French naval power when compared with that of England."--Provided by the publisher.
