Murder on the middle passage : the trial of Captain Kimber /Nicholas Rogers.
"On 2 April 1792, John Kimber, captain of the Bristol slave ship Recovery, was denounced in the House of Commons by William Wilberforce for flogging a fifteen-year-old African girl to death. The story, caricatured in a contemporary Isaac Cruikshank print, raced across newspapers in Britain and Ireland and was even reported in America. Soon after, Kimber was indicted for murder - but in a trial lasting just under five hours, he was found not guilty. This book is a micro-history of this important trial, reconstructing it from accounts of what was said in court and setting it in the context of pro- and anti-slavery movements. Rogers considers contemporary questions of culpability, the use and abuse of evidence, and why Kimber was criminally indicted for murder at a time when kidnapped Africans were generally regarded as 'cargo'. Importantly, the book also looks at the role of sailors in the abolition debate: both in bringing the horrors of the slave trade to public notice and as straw-men for slavery advocates, who excused the treatment of enslaved people by comparing it to punishments meted out to sailors and soldiers. The final chapter discusses the ways this incident has been used by African-American writers interested in recreating the trauma of the Middle Passage and addresses the question of whether the slave-trade archive can adequately recover the experience of being enslaved."--Provided by the publisher.

Sino-French trade at Canton, 1698-1842 / Susan E. Schopp.
"Sino-French Trade at Canton, 1698-1842 presents a rare and lively view of the French experience at Canton, and calls for a reappraisal of France's role in that trade. France was one of the two most important Western powers in the eighteenth century, and was home to one of the three major European East India companies. Yet the nation is woefully underrepresented in Canton trade scholarship. Susan E. Schopp rescues the French from the sidelines, showing that they exerted a presence that, though closely watched by their rivals, is today largely unrecognized. Their contributions were diverse, ranging from finding new sea routes to inspiring the renovation of hong faðcades. Consequently, to ignore the French, or to dismiss them as simply "also-rans," results in a skewed perception of the Canton system. Schopp also demonstrates that while the most distinctive aspect of the French model of company trade was the dominant role of the state -- indeed, the French East India Company has been memorably described as a "Versailles of trade" -- this did not rule out a place for legitimate, and sometimes surprising, participation by the private sector. On the contrary: France's commercial relations with China were inaugurated by private traders, and the popularity of the Canton trade spurred the eventual demise of the company model. Backed up by extensive archival work, Schopp's work demonstrates a remarkable understanding of the Sino-European trade, and her book reveals an unparalleled passion for the role of seamanship in history."--Provided by the publisher.

An African's life : the life and times of Olaudah Equiano, 1745-1797 /James Walvin.
A biography of Olaudah Equiano (1745-1797), known as Gustavus Vassa for much of his life. Enslaved at the age of about eleven, Equiano learned to read and write and converted to Christianity, eventually buying his freedom in 1766. Thereafter, much of his life was spent in London and at sea on British ships. He was an early campaigner against the slave trade, was employed by the British Government as an agent in their efforts to ship the black poor from London to Sierra Leone and was a leading member of the Sons of Africa, a campaigning group of educated black Londoners. Frequently called on as a spokesman for the black community, Equiano became a public figure in his own lifetime, publishing his autobiography, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, in 1789 which became one of the first examples of published writing by an African writer to be widely read.

"This book provides an in-depth analysis of the British private traders who engaged in the intra-Asian trade, known to contemporaries as the "country trade", between 1770 and 1820, providing much detail on who the traders were, how they conducted their operations, and how they interacted with indigenous societies in a complex and very volatile region. It examines their relations with East India Company, and their moves beyond the Company's orbit to open up independently new spheres of British commercial, political, and imperial influence. 'Rosy' Wemyss Admiral of the Fleet : the man who created Armistice day /John Johnson-Allen.
"Rosslyn Wemyss' life and career was both fascinating and brilliant - a most distinguished admiral who is very little known. He left an indelible mark on the life of this country when he was responsible, with Marshal Foch, for the creation of Armistice Day. One of the most illustrious of Scottish admirals, he was a member of the Clan Wemyss, whose ancestral seat is Wemyss Castle in Fife, overlooking the Firth of Forth. Rosslyn joined the Navy at the age of 13 in 1877, at the same time as Prince George, the younger son of the Prince of Wales, and they became lifelong friends. In 1915, by then a Rear Admiral, he commanded the Gallipoli landings and then the evacuation of all the troops. The latter was so successful that only one man was lost from approximately 140,000. Then in the Red Sea he supported the Arab Revolt and helped T.E. Lawrence and the Arabs to oust the Turks from all the ports on the eastern shore of the Red Sea. Without his support, the Arab Revolt would have collapsed and the legend of Lawrence of Arabia would not have been created. Through Rosslyn's rich archive of letters and reports, this book gives a wonderful insight into the life of a man who became one of the most popular and senior officers in the Royal Navy at the time, and who was known throughout the Navy as 'Rosy'."--Provided by the Publisher.

The Plimsoll Sensation : the Great Campaign to Save Lives at Sea /Nicolette Jones
A biography of Samuel Plimsoll (1824-1898), politician and reformer and the story of his campaign to improve the safety of merchant shipping. Plimsoll's focus was on 'coffin ships', vessels which were overloaded, unseaworthy and often overinsured by unscrupulous owners who risked the lives of their crew and passengers. Plimsoll devised a load line on a ship's hull which would indicate the maximum safe draught and as a result the minimum freeboard for the vessel in various operating conditions. He entered Parliament as an MP in 1867 but his efforts to introduce legislation for the adoption of the line were thwarted by the number of MPs with shipowning interests until 1876 when the Merchant Shipping Act gave stringent powers of inspection to the Board of Trade and made the line a requirement for ships leaving British ports. Known thereafter as the Plimsoll Line, the line was adopted internationally in 1930 with the first International Convention on Load Lines. Appendices include a collection of songs and poems about Plimsoll, a chronology, detailed notes and a bibliography.

"The 'little ships' of the Second World War - the fast and highly manoeuvrable motor torpedo boats and gunboats which fought in coastal waters all over the world - developed a special kind of naval warfare. With their daring nightly raids against an enemy's coastal shipping - and sometimes much larger warships - they acquired the buccaneering spirit of an earlier age. And never more so than in the close hand-to-hand battles which raged between opposing craft when they met in open waters. Large numbers of these small fighting boats were built by the major naval powers. The Germans called them Schnellboote (Fast Boats), referred to by the British as E-boats (E for Enemy). In the Royal Navy they were MTBs and MGBs. The American equivalent were PT boats (for Patrol Torpedo).
