John Kepler
A biography of German astronomer John Kepler (1571-1630) who lived just as the Scientific Revolution in Europe gained pace. He is best known for his astronomical career where he helped the Dutch astronomer Tycho Brahe catalogue and record observations and then use this data to formulate his laws of planetary motion. These laws would lay the crucial groundwork for Isaac Newton's theory of gravity. His astronomy also led him to produce a number of adjunct works in mathematics, optics, instrument building, natural philosophy and music. This book also covers his personal life from his humble family origins, his ill health and his niche religious beliefs which often set him apart from the status quo. As a result, he moved a number of times to various parts of Europe to find a favourable patron who could fund his work and family. The book has a number of colour plates of paintings of Kepler and the important people in his life. It covers his scientific ideas with diagrams and explanations and includes an index and glossary.

Shipping on the Thames and the Port of London during the 1940s-1980s / Malcolm Batten.
"During the 1970s and 1980s the Port of London, and shipping on the River Thames was in a state of transition. New methods of cargo handling, in particular the introduction of containers and Roll-on, Roll-off vehicle ferries called for new investment and a rethink on the way dock traffic was traditionally managed. As a result, The Port of London Authority decided to run down and close the various London docks and concentrate all new investment downriver at their Tilbury docks. These photographs, along with some from earlier decades, and mostly previously unpublished, are a fascinating insight into this period, when traditional ships and cargo handling methods worked alongside the new technology. Ships designed for carrying cargo in their holds were sometimes adapted to carry containers as deck cargo. There were also shipping types now lost to history, including colliers and sludge boats. Not forgotten are the passenger ships - cruise liners to ferries. The various vessels that serviced the port from tugs to salvage craft and floating cranes. Finally, the heritage craft from traditional Thames Sailing barges to former paddle steamers now adapted as floating pub/restaurants."--Provided by the publisher.

Britain's black past / edited and with an introduction by Gretchen H. Gerzina.
"Expanding upon the 2016 Radio 4 series Britain's Black Past, this book presents those stories and analyses through the lens of a recovered past. Even those who may be familiar with some of the materials will find much that they had not previously known, and will be introduced to people, places, and stories brought to light by new research. In a time of international racial unrest and migration, it is important not to lose sight of similar situations that took place in an earlier time. In chapters written by scholars, artists, and independent researchers, readers will learn of an early musician, the sales of slaves in Scotland, the grave - now a shrine - of a black enslaved boy left to die in Morecombe Bay, of a country estate owned by a mixed-race slave owner, and the two strikingly different people who lived in a Bristol house that is now a museum. Black sailors, political activists and memoirists appear in these pages, but the book also re-examines living history, in the form of modern plays, television programmes, and genealogical sleuthing. Through them, Britain's Black Past is not only presented anew, but shown to be very much alive in our own time."--Provided by the publisher.

Dressed to kill : British naval uniform, masculinity and contemporary fashions, 1748-1857 /Amy Miller.
"[Dressed to kill] seeks to show naval uniforms from a new perspective because it is important that the development of uniform be viewed alongside contemporary civilian fashions. The essays at the beginning not only examine the progression of regulations but also, more significantly, place the uniforms in their economic, social and historical contexts. They are followed by a catalogue of selected uniforms from the rich collections of the National Maritime Museum, which serve to reinforce the themes drawn out in the essays. The last section of line drawings of selected patterns provides an insight into the construction of the garments."--T.p. verso.

The folk culture of the slaves in Jamaica / Edward Kamau Brathwaite.
"Folk culture of the slaves in Jamaica was written as part of a larger work: The Development of Creole Society in Jamaica 1770-1820. It was abstracted from this book and first published in 1970 as a separate pamphlet because of popular interest. The 'Folk culture' is a succinct historical analysiss of an alternative tradition in one area of Caribbean society. This new edition, a third reprinting, conforms more closely to the text of the chapter in The Development of Creole Society in Jamaica 1770-1820. It also contains some additional analysis and an improved bibliography."--Provided by the publisher.

Edwin Lutyens : countryhouses - from the archives of Country Life
Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) was introduced to Country Life founder Edward Hudson by Gertrude Jekyll in 1889. Hudson promoted Lutyens's work and commissioned him to design the magazine's offices in Covent Garden in 1904 as well as three country houses. Country Life subsequently published articles about virtually all his buildings shortly after completion, creating a visual archive which has been used as the source for this work. Included are examples of Lutyens's Surrey vernacular style, early Arts and Crafts and Classical style houses as well as his alterations and extensions to existing buildings. Twenty-two buildings are featured with black and white photographs of each. The introduction outlines Lutyens's life, the architectural context in which he worked and introduces each of the properties included.

At the edge of empire : the life of Thomas B. Glover /Michael Gardiner.
A biography of trader and entrepreneur Thomas Blake Glover (1838-1911). Born in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Glover arrived in Nagasaki in 1859 after working for Jardine Matheson in Shanghai for two years. Glover supplied arms and ships to the rebel factions which went on to lead the Meiji government following the overthrow of the Tokugawa shogunate. Glover supplied warships to the new government and played a key role in the industrialisation of Japan. He introduced the first steam locomotive and invested in and managed the first coal mine to use western mining methods. He helped to establish businesses contributing to Mitsubishi's early growth and diversification and the formation of the Japan Brewery Company (now Kirin). He was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun in 1908.

A life of John Julius Angerstein, 1735-1823 : widening circles in finance, philanthropy and the arts in eighteenth century London /Anthony Twist.
A biography of John Julius Angerstein (1735-1823). Born in Russia, Angerstein moved to England under the patronage of merchant Andrew Thomson, said to be his father. Introduced to Lloyd's, Angerstein primarily worked in the marine insurance industry both as a broker and underwriter. He was member of the Committees of both Lloyd's and the Lloyd's Register of Shipping, serving as Chairman of Lloyd's between 1790-1796. Angerstein's family and business relationships connected him with several London merchant communities and as a Lloyd's broker and underwriter his growing wealth enabled him to amass a fine collection of paintings. On his death, many of these would be purchased to form the nucleus of the National Gallery's collection. The author notes that while there is no surviving comment by Angerstein on the question of slavery, Angerstein is likely to have insured ships in the West Indian slave trade and was a trustee for the creditors of two sugar estates in Grenada. Angerstein supported a number of charitable endeavours including The Patriotic Fund and with William Wilberforce was a member of the General Committe of the Society for Bettering the Condition and Increasing the Comforts of the Poor. He was an early supporter of Jenner's vaccination against smallpox. Angerstein lived in Greenwich, leasing an estate from Sir Gregory Page on which he built Woodlands, his home. The book has a number of photographic plates of art works in his collection, of Angerstein and his family and his homes. There are detailed notes and a bibliography.

A history of intellectual property in 50 objects / edited by Claudy Op den Kamp and Dan Hunter.
"What do the Mona Lisa, the light bulb, and a Lego brick have in common? The answer - intellectual property (IP) - may be surprising, because IP laws are all about us, but go mostly unrecognized. They are complicated and arcane, and few people understand why they should care about copyright, patents, and trademarks. In this lustrous collection, Claudy Op den Kamp and Dan Hunter have brought together a group of contributors - drawn from around the globe in fields including law, history, sociology, science and technology, media, and even horticulture - to tell a history of IP in 50 objects. These objects not only demonstrate the significance of the IP system, but also show how IP has developed and how it has influenced history. Each object is at the core of a story that will be appreciated by anyone interested in how great innovations offer a unique window into our past, present, and future."--Provided by the publisher.
