Panorama of the Thames : a riverside view of Georgian London /John R. Inglis & Jill Sanders. "This historical gift book is a reincarnation of a guide to the river Thames first published 1829 by Samuel Leigh. The original was a concertina of 45 printed and hand-coloured sheets, glued together to form a magnificent 60ft depiction of the river's north and south banks or Middlesex and Surrey banks, as they were then from Westminster Bridge to Petersham Meadows in Richmond. Among the buildings that stood along this 30-mile stretch of river in those days were many that no longer exist including the Houses of Parliament before they burned down in 1834, or the factory owned by the father of Isambard Kingdom Brunel but others still stand today. A great deal of the original panorama shows just trees and foliage, so for this book it has been edited down to feature the most interesting sections. These are grouped into 19 villages, each with a short 200-word introduction. The buildings are captioned (in the present tense, for vivid appeal), and there is an AZ detailing landmarks and key buildings in each section. Titanic captain : the life of Edward John Smith /G.J. Cooper. A biography of Edward John Smith (1850-1912), captain of the Titanic. Born in Staffordshire, Smith went to sea at the age of seventeen and rose through the ranks of the merchant navy. He served on both sailing ships and later the steamships of the White Star Line. Given the command of RMS Titanic for her maiden voyage in 1912, Smith, regarded by many as the 'millionaire's captain', was by then White Star's senior commander, admired and trusted by his wealthy passengers. Smith died following Titanic's collision with an iceberg. There are conflicting reports of Smith's actions and behaviour in the evacuation of the ship and of his death. Although open to criticism for his seamanship, Smith was exonerated of blame by both the US and British official inquiries. "On 11 June 1940, the British crown colony of Malta - which dominated the central Mediterranean and all-important sea routes to and from North Africa - was bombed for the first time by aircraft of the Italian Regia Aeronautica. The Italians were joined in their efforts by the German Luftwaffe in January 1941. Malta was effectively beleaguered for nearly two and a half years, dependent for survival on naval supply convoys and reliant for defence on often-outnumbered fighter aircraft and anti-aircraft guns. Black England : a forgotten Georgian history /Gretchen Gerzina. "The idea that Britain became a mixed-race country after 1945 is a common mistake. Georgian England had a large and distinctive Black community. Whether prosperous citizens or newly freed slaves, they all ran the risk of kidnap and sale to plantations. Black England tells their dramatic, often moving stories. In the eighteenth century, Black people could be found in clubs and pubs, there were special churches, Black-only balls and organisations for helping Black people who were out of work or in trouble. Many were famous and respected: most notably Francis Barber, Doctor Johnson's beloved manservant; Ignatius Sancho, a correspondent of Laurence Sterne; Francis Williams, a Cambridge scholar, and Olaudah Equiano whose Interesting Narrative went into multiple editions.
