The largest fish occupies the foreground of the work, and exhibits particularly detailed brushwork to illustrate its sleek scaled surface, gleaming eye and feathered fins. The surrounding blue waters are conveyed through comparatively rough and expressive brushstrokes. To the right of the drawing is a small sketch of a flying fish, completed in graphite.
