Dieppe magnetic azimuth dial
Dieppe magnetic azimuth dial for latitudes 0°-80° North [for equinoctial dial] and 50° North [for magnetic azimuth dial]. There is an equinoctial dial on leaf Ia and a lunar volvelle, with a lunar age scale and circular aperture to give visual representation of the phase of the moon, on leaf Ib. On leaf IIa is the magnetic azimuth dial with a pewter-brass alloy elliptical scale. The compass needle is a modern replacement and on the compass card is a gazetteer for 19 French towns. There is a date scale and perpetual calender on leaf IIb.
This dial, signed 'Fait & Inuen par Charles BLoud ADieppe' on leaf IIb, is typical of Bloud's work. The table of latitudes in the compass bowl also supplies other information about the towns listed, such as their status as market towns or the presence of a diocesan bishop.
