St Paul's Cathedral, London, at sunset
Edward William Cooke trained as an engraver, developing a meticulously accurate technique from an early age. Because of his detailed knowledge of ships and their rigging, Cooke was employed by Clarkson Stanfield to make studies of details of ships for him. His observation of sea conditions was all-embracing and his work offers a wealth of information for the marine historian.
