One of four watercolours painted in Malta. This one shows the captain's undress coat, epaulettes, cocked hat, white waistcoat, white pantaloons, black hessian boots, sword, sword-belt, white stock and yellow gloves
This is inscribed lower left 'Anton..' or 'Antonaci' but is known to be the Maltese artist Antonio Grech, working around 1800. The leaders of Malta offered the main island to Sir Alexander Ball in 1800, requesting that it become a British dominion. Under the terms of the Treaty of Paris (1814), Malta officially became part of the British Empire.
